Hodge is the third actor to portray Cross, following in the footsteps of Morgan Freeman, who first played him on screen in 1997’s Kiss the Girls and again in the 2001 sequel Along Came a Spider; and Tyler Perry as the titular character Alex Cross in 2012, which bombed at the box office and led Lionsgate to scrap the planned sequel to James Patterson’s bestselling book series Double Cross. But the series has had its ups and downs with an extended eight-episode run that doesn’t justify its runtime. Ryan Eggold, Samantha Walkes and Isaiah Mustafa shine in supporting roles, but it’s Eloise Mumford and Karen Robinson who stand out and even steal the show from Aldis Hodge’s commanding lead performance. If only creator Ben Watkins had kept the storyline tighter and focused on the investigative elements rather than the main character’s personal struggles, this could have been a groundbreaking series. A watchable film, but don’t expect the levels of “Reacher” or “Sugar.”
